I love the Palm Springs airport.
I went for an event at one of my favorite stores, Super Simple, during Modernism week. And to install a new wall hanging called SEQUINS, a repeating pattern of 3 large stoneware discs- customizable for any size.
The event was a group 'show' showcasing the work of myself, artist Marcelo Bengoechea and fellow ceramicists Klein Reid.
And since I was out west I planned a few days in Joshua Tree, one of my favorite places- little did I know I was about to go on a FOUND ART extravaganza!
First stop the Salton Sea- which has a crazy history that I knew nothing of.
And just beyond that Salvation Mountain- a five-story high, 150-foot-wide art project crowned by the words “God Is Love,” which is an exuberantly painted folk-art jumble of hearts, birds, flowers, and trees.
Through Slab City- an off-the-grid community. The name comes from the concrete slabs that were left after the WWII Marine Camp was torn down.
To East Jesus- a sprawling 30 acre experimental, sustainable, habitable, found art installation started by Charlie Russel in 2006.
And then to Bombay Beach- A popular getaway for beachgoers until the 1980s, when the draining and increasing salinity of the Salton Sea destroyed the lake's ecosystem and drove businesses and residents out of the area, making it a ghost town. People have moved back into the area, and the town's many abandoned structures have drawn visitors back. The beach is wide and filled with art- The Bombay Beach Biennale, an annual art festival, is held here.
To Joshua Tree and then to see the work the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum- an artist and sculptor who lived and worked most of his life in LA & Joshua Tree and co-founded the Watts Towers Art Center.Damn that was a lot. And it was all great. Here's an onslaught of photos.
