FAQ

I am a total beginner, can I sign up for Clay Club?

Yes, Clay Club is perfect for absolute beginners or experienced ceramicists

Is this a led class? Do I have to follow along if I know what I want to make?

Saturday sessions have an experienced Ceramicist from MQuan Studio present, who will demo a hand building project that highlights a ceramic technique. All participants are welcome to watch and use the demo as a project to work on, but if you have prior clay experience you are welcome to spend the entire time on your own project.

After the demo, the instructor is available for general one on one help.

Can I sign up for some sessions mid-month?

Yes, you can start anytime and sign up for as many Saturdays as you want!

Is this for Hand Building or Wheel Throwing?

The studio has space for 6 hand builders & 4 wheel throwers.

Demos are in hand building, unless all participants are throwing on the wheel.

However, if you have signed up for wheel, you will not be ignored!

I want to throw on the wheel but have never done it before. Can I sign up and do the wheel?

If you want to throw on the wheel, and have never done it before please reach out to us prior to signing up at clayschool@mquan.com

I signed for a handbuilding spot, can I do both hand building & wheel?

You need to choose which technique per session.

Can I make something in one session?

Yes you can make something in one session, and decorate with slips or underglazes. Once the work is dry, we will fire it for you to pick up.

What if I cannot come back to pick it up?

Shipping is available- estimate $15-$20 per small box

How long does it take to get it back?

The studio does one bisque firing & one glaze firing per month. When the work is dry (1-3 weeks depending on thickness) it will load into the next bisque firing. You can schedule another session to glaze your work, or we can fire it without glaze.

What kind of clay, and glazes are available?

The studio has a Cone 6 speckled stoneware from Tucker Clay (CCSS). Clay is shared & recycled. New boxes of clay are available for purchase.

The glazes are a range of commercial underglazes & glazes.

What are the Clay & Firing usage limits?

Clay: Each 50lb box of clay is approximately $40, not including delivery or shipping costs. We estimate about 10-15lbs of clay usage per person, per session, give or take. There are no credits for clay not used, or supplying your own clay.

Firing Fees (Per piece): Free up to 8" x 8" x 12" / .05 per cubic inch for larger works

Can I bring my own clay? Tools? Glazes?

Tools- yes! But note there is no storage available for personal belongings in between sessions.

Clay & Glaze- Clay and Glazes must meet studio requirements. Please reach out to us at clayschool@mquan.com with clay and/or glaze information

Bringing your own clay or glaze does not affect the session cost.

Do I have to stay for the whole session?

No, clay class is a flexible, at-will clay class. But please note that unused time will not be credited or affect the session cost.

I signed up for a session but need to cancel.

Cancellations for credit must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

I signed up a sessions, but could not come. Can I get a refund or a credit?

Unfortunately, no. We have committed to creating a flexible workshop, with instruction every Saturday no matter how many attendees.

"I had zero experience with ceramics when I attended my first class.  With Michele’s guidance I’ve learned so much!  I created several pieces I’m actually proud of! Clay class is my favorite 4 hours each week." (J.Zander)
